We were recently inspired at the tri district conference on the Gold Coast.
Rotary conferences offer an energising blend of inspiration, learning, and connection. They bring members together from across districts to share ideas, celebrate achievements, and discover new ways to create impact in their communities and beyond. Through keynote speakers, project showcases, and hands‑on discussions, conferences broaden our understanding of Rotary’s global reach while strengthening the friendships and partnerships that make our work possible. They remind us why we serve — and how much more we can achieve when we learn from one another.
Danny, Kirsti, Gay L, Sally, Heather, and Terri attended, which was an excellent turnout for a club of our size.
I didn’t attend the dinners or the disco; however, the others did—so be sure to ask them for photos of their 1970’s groovy costumes and dance moves!
The House of Friendship was extensive, featuring 29 stalls.
Below are the key points I took away from the conference and how our club can benefit from and be involved in these initiatives.
Rotary Birthing Kits
Together with the Inner Wheel Club, the Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacific assembles birthing kits and is delighted to have us as a partner. This is where our Cut to Size used sheets, towels, string, and bags will be going. RARE cannot get enough birthing kits.
Stationery Supplies for Schools
I spoke with Phil from RARE, who explained that stationery supplies for schools are a “hot commodity.” The best part is that this project uses repurposed materials we often throw out. Please clean out your drawers and give me your stationery and craft supplies such as pencils, pens, erasers, paper clips, staples, chalk, glue, and more. I may need to purchase items like rulers, scissors, or glue to complete the kits.
Guest Speakers I Found Particularly Interesting
Captain Sarah Perry
Rotary is already heavily involved in this program, so you may be familiar with it. It centres around a Tasmanian based Tall Ship called Windeward Bound, where the crew consists of young people undertaking a 10‑day boot‑camp‑style voyage. They are planning a journey to Gladstone next year, and there may be opportunities for our club to get involved.
Mahir Mohamand – CEO of RAWCS
I continue to be amazed by the scope and reach of the work undertaken by RAWCS. Mahir shared his personal story of being a refugee on three occasions—he was a recipient of support and now as someone giving back through RAWCS. His story was confronting and deeply moving; the room collectively gasped when he recounted his experiences (too detailed and graphic to repeat here).
Amanda and Sophie Clayton – Founders of Kids Hospital PJs
Sophie suffered a stroke at the age of four, resulting in long hospital stays. The standard white hospital gowns were depressing, so Amanda began making brightly coloured, loose‑fitting pyjamas that were theatre‑friendly and fitted with press studs for tubes and drains. This significantly improved Sophie’s mood and recovery. With Rotary support, they have now gone into production and hope to make these pyjamas available to all children in hospitals.
Dr Daniel Blackmore – Queensland Brain Institute
Dr Blackmore spoke about the benefits and types of exercise that can help slow the progression of dementia. It turns out I’ve been doing it all wrong! High‑intensity exercise (rather than light or moderate) is best for cognitive function in people over 65.

Other Highlights I Enjoyed
- Emerald Rotary, which built a hangar and support building for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (5 years of fundraising)
- Mackay Rotary, which has enthusiastically embraced the NO to DV campaign
- PDG Wendy Pletheroe, always an excellent source of Foundation information
- Hon. Milton Dick MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives
- Paul Fairweather, Archibald finalist, who painted live during his presentation—very impressive
- Paddington Rotaract, who shared their experience of building a library in the Solomon Islands
- Seeing all the YEP students with Heather.
I also gained valuable information from the Interact talk, Peace Fellows, and sponsors.
Incoming DG Rita’s partner charity is building a classroom with student accommodation in the Himalayas.
Please be sure to speak with the other attendees to hear about their highlights as well.
